Large-scale Tibetan Opera Songtsan Gambo to debut in Tibet

Tibetan Opera, an ancient traditional Chinese ethnic minority art form, dates back to about 1,400 years ago. Compared with other folk operas of Chinese ethnic minorities, it has the longest history. It is also the reflection of Tibetan culture, history and arts. Usually performances are held on various festive occasions, such as Losar (Tibetan New Year), Shoton Festival, Ongkor Festival. Besides, Tibetan Opera has a variety of themes including Princess Wencheng, Prince Nuosang and Drowa Sangmo which are favored among the Tibetan people.

Recently, the large-scale Tibetan Opera Songtsan Gambo’s first performance at Tibetan Opera Art Center of Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, caught lots of citizens’ eyes with the largest scale and the most spectacular scenes. Based on the history, the opera tells the story of Songtsan Gambo, the King of ancient Tubo.

During the 7th century, Songtsan Gambo unified Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and established the Tubo Dynasty, and perfectly promoted the development of Tibetan politics, economy and culture. [Liu Fang, He Huizhong]
