This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 60th anniversary of Tibet's Democratic Reform. Over the years, the Central Committee of China and the government of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region have made great effort to protect and carry forward the excellent traditional culture of Tibet and develop the socialistic advanced culture, thus bringing a great development and prosperity of Tibet's cultural cause and enriching the cultural life of local people. By the end of 2018, the comprehensive population coverage of regional broadcast and television have reached 97.1% and 98.2% respectively; the annual output value of regional cultural industry have reached 4.6 billion yuan RMB.

Cultural cause flourished

With the sound of drum, Obar, Gyalu and Lhamo come on the stage in succession to perform Tibetan Opera. Melodious singing voice and classic dancing posture show the romantic charm of traditional Tibetan Opera. The audiences sitting around are using their phones to take pictures, and the joy of watching opera permeates the whole park.

During the performance, Dzongyab Lukhang Park is full of people, they sit cross-legged on the ground, or sit upright on the steps, or lean over the banisters. For watching Tibetan Opera, they do not care the hot sun, or the crowd, laughter and applause fill the park, that is the scene in Dzngyab Lukhang Park during the 2019 Shoton Festival.

Due to different natural conditions, living customs, cultural traditions and dialects in different regions of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Tibetan Opera has many artistic varieties and genres. Tibetan Opera, being called "the living fossil" of Tibetan culture, is a massive drama system and originates 600 years ago. Approved by the State Council, Tibetan Opera is included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006, and is included in the representative list of UNESCO humanity intangible cultural heritage in 2009. Through years of development, Tibet has more than 140 folk Tibetan Opera groups.

Tibetan opera is only one epitome of Tibetan cultural cause's great development and prosperity. Over the 60 years, the region has established many cultural places, including Working People's Cultural Palace, movie theaters and 75 ethnic art troupes in cities and prefecture, as well as 2,400 village amateur groups, all of these spread new socialistic culture to remote areas. Meanwhile, many high-quality cultural products have been made, which have achieved both social and economic benefits, and have become the distinctive name card of Tibetan cultural tourism. By the end of 2018, the comprehensive population coverage of regional broadcast and television has reached 97.1% and 98.2% respectively. It has been basically realized that every city (prefecture) has libraries, every county has a comprehensive cultural activity center, every township has a cultural service center, and every administrative village has a cultural room, reading room and projector room. The annual output value of regional cultural industry has reached 4.6 billion yuan RMB, and there are 234 cultural industry model bases in total.

Collection resources of Tibet Library improved constantly

Apart from the artistic entertainment projects, the development of Tibetan public culture has also achieved a great breakthrough. In Aug. 29th, the staffs of Tibet Library bring books to the military camps as usual. Such a public cultural service, which is impossible in pervious, not only meets the reading needs of soldiers, but also provides them the convenience of "borrowing books without going out", and increases the continuity of soldiers' reading habits and enriches their amateur cultural life as well.

Tibet Library has been officially opened to the public from 1996 with only 673 available seats. By the end of 2018, the number of library resources has reached 400,000 books, including 300,000 Chinese language books, 40,000 Tibetan language books and others. Now the library has 16 branch libraries and 170 mobile library centers.

Meanwhile, the Department of Finance has increased the financial support to public library continually. As for the book-purchasing funds, it increased from initially 200,000 RMB yuan to 2,000,000 yuan RMB now, which effectively meets public reading needs.

With the continuous improvement of the collection resources of public libraries, and the increasing number of book bars and corners, reading has become a habit of many people in Tibet, and also an option of leisure time. The habit of civil reading has gradually formed, and more and more people enjoy the benefits brought by the development of public culture.
