Yanjing, salt well in Chinese, is famous for its spectacular scenery of saline fields. Salt mining has always been a main industry in Yanjing with a history of more than 1,000 years.

Yanjing, located in Mangkam County of Chamdo City, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, has a long history of salt producing ever since Tang Dynasty, which has greatly improved local people's livelihood. At present, there are still two villages produce salt in traditional way in Yanjing. The traditional salt producing process is like this: firstly, local salt farmers fetch water from salt wells by the Lancang River; secondly, they transport the water to brine troughs in wooden barrels. Then, salt farmers empty the water into their own salt fields to dry them with the help of hot sunshine and rich wind. Although the production volume of this primitive production method is low, the traditional wind-drying technique has been handed down over generations in this area.

In 2008, the salt producing technique in Yanjing has been listed in the second batch of nation intangible cultural heritage.[Jia Dan, He Huizhong]
