Tibet: 827 km² forests to be planted in 2017

According to Department of Forestry in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), 827 km² forests will be planted in this year, the whole plan consists of ecological public welfare forests in key areas, afforestation and land greening around Lhasa City, natural forest protection, voluntary tree planting and plateau ecological security barrier protection and construction.

Yang Dekang, the vice section chief of TAR Academy of Forest Production introduced that 4,000 plants including Hebei poplars, Cathay poplars and Gyantse sea-buckthorns will all be delivered to Namlin County of Shigatse City, mainly used for afforestation and land greening along rivers. “These plants are all selected by professional workers; the rate of survival can reach 90%, which is very high on high land.” He said.

TAR Academy of Forestry is predicted to produce 400 thousand saplings, which will be delivered to all places of the region to afforestation and science popularization and application. Presently, the seedling stage is hopefully to be ended by April. Furthermore, in order to further meet the afforestation need of the region, 13 new varieties of trees are planned to be brought in, include Xinjiang aspen, abele, populus diversifolia, mulberry and sorbaria sorbifolia.
