| Tibet will provide wireless digital TV service later this year in four pilot areas, namely, Lhasa, Chamdo, Xigaze and Nyingchi, according to the Tibet Business. Different from cable TV, the wireless digital TV falls into different types, including the ground digital broadcasting, mobile digital TV, the China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) and satellite TV.

TV viewers now still have to install a set-top box to receive digital TV programs. In the primary stage, they can receive 120 channels at most, said Tao Pengwan, director of the Regional Radio and TV Network Transmission Center. Meanwhile, Tibet will also promote the use of cable TV and explore the ways to integrate the telecommunications network, the radio and TV network and the Internet. Lhasa had 79,000 cable TV subscribers at the end of 2009 and is expected to have 40,000 more in the future. |
