The black jade is one of stones unique to the plateau on mountains at an average altitude of 4,500 meters. According to ancient records, Nyatri Tsenpo, the first Tibetan king, sculptured black jade into a pagoda which is the cover for a cave where he sealed Buddhist scriptures and pagoda molds received from heaven. This pagoda is the first piece of black jade sculptures in Tibet history.

The artistry of Tibet black jade sculpture was listed as Tibet Autonomous Region’s intangible culture relic in 2012. Thubten Gyaco, the inheritor of Tibet black jade sculpture, now has about 30 students, introducing this artistry to the world.
