Financial support guarantees effective cultural protection in Tibet
  2008-Oct-8 Wed

The Chinese government has made great endeavors to preserve intangible cultural heritage includes festival, folk art, traditional technique and drama in Tibet by inviting a great amount of human, financial and material resources.

Folk artists are a force to be reckoned with for protecting and carrying forward the culture. The Ministry of Culture has twice nominated dozens of excellent folk artists as "carriers of Chinese traditional intangible culture", 31 Tibetans were included. So far, 37 items in Tibet have been inscribed into the state level intangible cultural heritages.

Tibetan culture has swept intangible cultural heritage list in China. In May 2006, the state council issued the 1st list of China's intangible cultural heritages, Tibetan opera, Thangka painting, King Gesar, Shoton Festival etc. totalling 25 items were embodied. In June 2008, the second list was released counting another 19 items in Tibet.

The luxuriant Tibetan culture was nourished for generations by local Tibetans. A majority of them is descended in an oral way by folk artists or locals. With years passing by, the death of folk artists is likely to end such a culture.

For fear of losing the precious cultural heritage, Tibet has set up a special body to preserve, protect as well as save the region's folk art with support from the central government. The body has launched an all-round way cultural census in Tibet, collecting dozens of precious materials of music, dancing, singing, adage, drama, and so on, that kept in folk and then published lots of classics, theses, monographs based on the materials after carefully compiled and arranged.

As one of the great heroes in Tibetan history, the life of King Gesar has been widely publicized orally among Tibetans for generations, turning the epic of King Gesar into the longest as well as the only living epic in the world. In 1970s, the Epic of King Gesar was inscribed into the national intangible cultural heritage list. The protection of King Gesar was thus highly regarded.

By far, there are 140 King Gesar folk artists in China. Samdrup, 86, is one of the models. In the last 20 years, the old man has recorded 2,114 hours of audiotapes of King Gesar and the audiotapes have been published to 30 volumes. In the next three years, the amount is expected to reach 45. Till now, 5,000 hours of audiotapes from Tibet have been recorded, 41 volumes have been collected and 32 hand-written copies have been compiled.

According to the Nyima Tsering, head of Tibet Ministry of Culture, the State Ministry of Culture has earmarked more than four million yuan in recent years, to help Tibet with its cultural heritage protection. So far, a total of 121 intangible cultural heritages at region level were nominated and the state council has allocated special fund to assist the work.

With great concern and financial support from the central government, Tibet has done a good job in the cultural protection.
